The Dumfriesshire and Stewarty Hunt

Joe Graham hunted the country in the mid nineteenth century, and showed such fine sport that a monument was erected to him close to the old kennels at Leafield, overlooking the Annan valley.

The Jardines of Castle Milk became involved in 1895, and their family continued as joint masters with the Brooks family of Hoddom and Kinmount for over a century. During this time the famous black and tan Dumfriesshire foxhounds were bred and showed unique sport, with their low-scenting powers and wonderful deep cry. After foot and mouth in 2001 the pack was disbanded and the country hunted by visiting packs for three seasons. The present hunt was formed in 2006.

The country stretches from the English march at Gretna to Newton Stewart in the west. The Solway forms the southern boundary and to the north the boundary is generally that of the counties of Dumfries & Galloway and South Ayrshire. Most of it is grass, with much forestry and some bogs.
